In her first regular broadcast series gig, actress-singer Ashley Tisdale has signed on to co-star on the CW pilot “Hellcats.”

“Hellcats,” which is executive produced by “Smallville” star Tom Welling, centers on Marti (Aly Michalka), a college girl from the wrong side of the tracks who, after losing her scholarship because of budget cutbacks and her mother’s (Gail O’Grady) chronic irresponsibility, joins the Hellcats, the college’s competitive cheerleading team.

“High School Musical” alumna Tisdale will play Sierra, the peppy and fiercely intense captain of the Hellcats who, after an initial clash with Marti, her new roommate, realizes that she just might be the godsend the Hellcats need to win the championship.

Like Michalka, who starred on Disney Channel’s “Phil of the Future,” Tisdale has also become a star on Disney Channel.

In addition to her role as Sharpay Evans in the “HSM” franchise, she also co-starred on the channel’s comedy “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and voiced a character on “Phineas and Ferb.”

On broadcast TV, she did an arc on the CBS sitcom “Still Standing.”

Don’t forget Ashley’s guest appearance on The Cleveland Show will air tomorrow night on FOX at 8:30 PM ET/PT. The episode is entitled “The Curious Case of Jr. Working at The Stool” and she will be providing the voice of Lacey Stapleton.

Vanessa Hudgens got a big surprise Monday night – a group of about 100 friends gathered at East Restaurant & Lounge in Hollywood to celebrate her 21th birthday.

Hudgens, decked out in a black mini dress with lace cut-out arms, arrived with beau Zac Efron in a chauffeured Audi Q7, and “when she walked in was completely surprised!” says a guest at the party.

Guests including Ashley Tisdale, Selena Gomez, Brittany Snow, and Corbin Bleu greeted her, while DJ Zen Freeman handled the tunes for the night, playing a mix of hip-hop and top 20 hits.

Efron gave a heartfelt speech – wishing Hudgens a very happy birthday and encouraging guests to have a fun night. Partygoers noshed on East signature dishes including the crab cakes and scallops on the half shell while mingling and dancing.

Hudgen’s red velvet birthday cake was presented to her about an hour into the party. “She seemed overjoyed and grateful for the whole experience,” says the guest.

“Zac and Vanessa were adorable together,” says another guest. “They were smiling at each other and laughing and are really sweet to each other. Great couple.”

Over the past three years, Ashley Tisdale has pretty much become synonymous with Sharpay Evans. But now, her time at East High is totally dunzo, and she’s got a new flick to prove it. In Aliens in the Attic, Ashley plays Bethany Pearson, a girl who just wants to spend her vacay making lovey-dovey faces at her hottie BF (played by Robert Hoffman). But Bethany’s plans are derailed when she and her sibs find out that there are, well, aliens living in the attic of their Maine vacation home. Major butt kicking ensues, and Ashley even gets to tussle with an alien herself! What’s it like fighting with an imaginary alien? Ashley Tisdale’s older sister Jennifer Tisdale is expecting her first child with fiance Shane, a source close to the couple tells JustJared.com.

“They couldn’t be happier,” the source reveals. “They’re ecstatic and planning to get married later this month.”

Jennifer, 27, announced her engagement to Shane via Twitter earlier this month.

Yesterday, mama-to-be Jennifer tweeted that she’s moving into a bigger apartment to fit her growing family: “Getting ready to pack up my apartment So excited about getting a bigger place w/ my loves!”

Who was that good-looking mystery man pushing Ashley Tisdale’s luggage cart at LAX recently?

It’s not what you think, insists the newly-single Tisdale.

“He’s a really hot, good friend of mine,” the singer-actress told E! of her relationship with music-video director Scott Speer. “I’m not in a relationship. I’m single.”

Tisdale, 23, recently split from V Factory musician and her High School Musical costar Jared Murillo. And she’s been friends with Speer, 26, “for a really long time,” says one source – not to mention colleagues as well. Speer worked with Tisdale in 2007 and directed the just-released video for the single “It’s Alright, It’s OK,” from her new album, Guilty Pleasure.

“We have a really good, creative relationship,” she told E! But the couple sure looked more cozy, less collegial, as they strolled arm-in-arm after lunching in Malibu on Saturday.

“They’ve been enjoying hanging out together,” says a friend, of the blossoming romance. “Ashley’s just easing back into the dating world.”

Ashley Tisdale recently split from her boyfriend, Jared Murillo of the boy band V Factory, but the pair are as friendly as ever.

“They remain good friends,” Murillo’s dad Alex tells PEOPLE exclusively, of his son, 20, and Tisdale, 23. “They are in the same circle, they have the same friends. And you know what? You never know how life turns out. They might hook up again, you just never know.”

Adds Murillo’s dad, “I think it was just the right time to do what they did.”

The couple’s split comes at a time when Murillo’s band (he also previously co-starred in High School Musical with Tisdale) is becoming increasingly busy: They’re gearing up to shoot the video for V Factory’s new single, “Lovestruck.” Also on tap is a tour and a Warner Brothers Records-released album, both slated for this summer.

“Jared is very, very happy, and is very pleased with what’s going on with his work,” the elder Murillo tells PEOPLE. “I think for him it’s a good time now to move forward. His background has always been performing on the road, so he’s very comfortable. It’s like his home. It is home.”

And not surprisingly, Murillo’s dad is one of V Factory’s biggest fans. “They’ve got some dynamite songs,” he says of the five-member group, which has a pop/R&B/urban sound. “They’re going to be the big surprise of the summer.”
